Intro to Junior Speech

  • Schedule - Saturday afternoon 2-3 PM
  • Prerequisite - Intro to Junior Speech summer camp

Students in this age category (10-12 years) will build upon the basic tenets of Speech for both Platform and Interpretation categories.

They will learn about templates of speech, about verbal and nonverbal skills, and ways to avoid the common mistakes. Students will learn how to express emotion and to match their delivery tone with the appropriate emotion being projected in their speeches. In addition to the vocal delivery, coaches will teach eye contact, modulation, and physical presence while giving a speech.

Advanced Junior Speech

  • Schedule - Saturday afternoon 3-4 PM
  • Prerequisite - Returning students from Intro to Junior Speech academic year club.

Students will build upon the previous years’ Intro to Junior Speech class and learn 2 new forms of Speech – a limited preparation Impromptu category, and a Digital Expository category.

These two new speech types will allow our students to become holistic speakers who will be able to adapt to different environments at school, competitions, or social settings, and speak with poise and clarity.

Coaches will teach similarities between impromptu and platform, how to formulate and structure the points, and how to think as they go. Digital Expository will help students build presentations and delivery skills using digital tools and students will learn tools for making them visually appealing and aesthetic.

Intro to Senior Speech

  • Schedule - Saturday afternoon 12-1 PM
  • Prerequisite - Returning students from Advanced Junior academic year club or Intro to Senior Speech 2-day summer camp.

Students will build further upon the basics of Speech for both Platform and Limited Prep categories; students will learn original content writing, organization, and analysis for each category with a focus on the 5 tenets of speech. Students will learn both the written and delivery skills necessary to give a great speech.

Intro to Senior Speech and Team Policy Debate

  • Schedule - Saturday Afternoon in-person 1-3 PM and alternating Wednesdays 7-8:30 PM online
  • Prerequisite - Intro to Senior Speech & Debate 4-day summer camp.

Students will build upon the basics of Speech for both Platform and Limited Prep categories; students will learn content organization and analysis for each category with a focus on the 5 tenets of speech. Students will learn both the written and delivery skills necessary to give a great speech.

The debate portion will focus on understanding the evidence, writing the affirmative construct, issues and flowing the argument. Students will be introduced to cross-examination, writing the negative brief, refutation of the opponents points, voting issues, presentation and delivery in more depth.

Intermediate Senior Speech and Team Policy Debate

  • Schedule - Saturday Afternoon in-person 3-5 PM and alternating Wednesdays 7-8:30 PM online.
  • Prerequisite - Intro to Senior Speech & Debate academic year club.

The intermediate speech club will build upon the previous year and add Extemporaneous speech (current affairs) in Limited Prep category which will provide the students a well rounded knowledge of key topics from around the world.

Knowledge of domestic and international issues will provide added tools for the debaters to lean in to support the broader base of debate cases. The intermediate debate club will delve deeper into the new resolution, building the affirmative case, advanced structures and hit sheets.

Students will build upon from last year with enhanced research, cross-examination and negative brainstorming skills. The all important evidence-less debate round along with enhanced voting issues and flowing will also be taught.

Advanced Senior Team Policy Debate

  • Schedule - Saturday Afternoons 4-5 PM.
  • Prerequisite - Intermediate Senior Speech & Debate academic year club.

This club will transition our students into being entirely self-supporting in debate, to build upon the learned material from before mastering a specific skill set or gaining competency in a specific area.

In this Advanced Debate curriculum, we will be teaching students to interact with argumentative objectives in a nuanced and comprehensive way. We will work on developing an understanding of emotional persuasion and to utilize personal viewpoints to your advantage.

We will seek to further the debater’s ability to write in a rhetorically persuasive manner. We will teach students to analyze complex issues, and approach data with unique interpretations that extend beyond surface-level understanding.

I certify that my student and l've read the ZSDA website and we are in full awareness and will be in full compliance of the ZSDA Program Policies and Rules.
I have read the club descriptions on the ZSDA website for all courses. (For Senior Students who are taking Debate - I understand and agree that my student will attend both the Saturday in-person club weekly and the bi-monthly Wednesday online round from 7-8:30pm.)
I have access to the current academic year schedule but understand and recognize that the schedules might be subject to change. ZSDA will provide as much advance notice as possible in the event of a schedule change, but cannot make any compensation due to that change.
As parent/guardian of the Minor, I agree that I will promptly communicate any problems or issues associated with the Minor's participation in the Program with ZSDA's directors. I agree that I will promptly report and disclose to ZSDA's directors all pertinent information concerning the Minor's ability to participate successfully in the Program, including any and all health concerns. I further represent that my child is in good health condition and does not possess any learning disabilities or cognitive limitations that limit their participation in the program and in group activities.
I hereby release and agree to hold ZSDA harmless from, and waive on behalf of my student, myself, my heirs, and any personal representatives any and all causes of action, claims, demands, damages, costs, expenses and compensation for damage or loss to myself and/or property that may be caused by any act, or failure to act by ZSDA, or that may otherwise arise in any way in connection with any services received from ZSDA. I understand that this release discharges ZSDA from any liability or claim that my student, myself, my heirs, or any personal representatives may have against ZSDA with espect to any bodily injury, illness, death, medical treatment, or property damage that may arise from, or in connection to, any services received from ZSDA. I also agree to be held liable for any and all damages, costs, and/or reparations to ZSDA and the host facilities for any damages caused by my child(ren). This liability waiver and release extends to all of ZSDA together with all owners, partners, and staff.
I agree that neither the student nor my family members will take photos or videos of any teaching materials, classes, or tournaments. All materials including any shared material with the students are copyrighted by ZSDA and distribution or dissemination of any ZSDA material, photos, etc to any entity outside of ZSDA is expressly proibited and grounds for dismissal from the Academy and a lawsuit. ZSDA has the permission to photograph my student and if used for any promotional distribution, ZSDA will hide their name to maintain their privacy.
I understand and accept that the registration fees are non-refundable and non-transferable, and that my registration is my commitment that my student will participate in the program, to the best of their ability and without discord from students or parents, and with full adherence to the Academy Rules and Policies. There will be no exception made to this clause; withdrawal or removal from the program, at any point in time, will not be grounds for refund of money paid. I also understand that registration fees are not inclusive of tournament fees.
I acknowledge the contagious nature of COVID-19 and that the CDC continues to recommend preventative measures (cdc.gov). I further acknowledge that ZSDA has put in place preventative measures to reduce the spread of Covid-19. I also acknowledge that ZSDA cannot guarantee that my student or their families will not become infected with Covid-19. I understand that the risk of becoming exposed to and/or infected by Covid-19 may result from the actions, omissions, or negligence of my student and others, including, but not limited to ZSDA staff, other students, and their families. I voluntarily seek to enroll my student at ZSDA and acknowledge that | am increasing my family's risk to exposure of Covid-19. I acknowledge that my student must comply with all set procedures to reduce the spread while attending the academic year clubs.
With my full legal name/signature, I acknowledge and attest that all the aforementioned information l've provided is true and that l'm the parent/legal guardian of the student registering for the Academic Club.
